Best Songs of 2011 (No Turn Unstoned #177)

First of all, Happy New Year to all of my listeners! I’m glad to get back to the show.

This is the 2nd set of 4 best of 2011 sets. This one features the best songs of 2011 and is by far my favorite show to mix each year. The last set featured the top 10 albums of 2011. Next week will be the best remixes of 2011, and the following week the originals of the remixes.

Even though Africa Hitech’s Out in the Streets is hands down song of the year, generally I didn’t include songs that I played during the best albums of 2011 mix in order to not be repetitive.

This mix does include a few songs from 2010, most notably if they were released in November or December of 2010. However, there are a couple songs from 2010 that were released earlier than that, that I just could not stop playing throughout the entire year of 2011.

All Prince fans are salivating right about now. There have been several, landmark Prince associates’ releases all released within weeks of each other. So, I’ve decided to hijack my No Turn Unstoned radio show and do a trilogy of shows for Prince’s associates’ new releases. This particular show will feature The Time / Original 7ven. Last Week’s show was in celebration of fDELUXE’s (AKA The Family) new album, Gaslight. Next week’s show will feature The Escovedo family for their new release, Now and Forever.

Find Myself A CITY To Live In (No Turn Unstoned #169)

Two songs are driving this week’s theme, the city. I’m still in Fishbone mode after last week’s set; I wanted to play Angelo Moore’s Dr. Madd Vibe project last week, but decided to do a Fishbone only set. My favorite Dr. Madd Vibe song is Get Out of the City. In addition, I recently watched the Talking Head’s Stop Making Sense concert film, and I really love their cities song. As a result, this set was born;)

FISHBONE is red hot mix (No Turn Unstoned #168)

Celebrating the release of their 25th anniversary EP, Crazy Glue, and their documentary, Everyday Sunshine, which is currently touring the states, this week’s mix features the music of the legendary Fishbone, one of the best bands EVER! Angelo Moore is the one of the most underrated singers of rock. His voice is so malleable and versatile. Angelo’s voice backed by Dirty Walt’s yelps and uh huhs or Dirty Walt’s vocals backed by Angelo’s wailing is just priceless. The chemistry of the original lineup is pure magic.

Their music has impacted my life so much that is simply impossible to put it in words, and, if you’ve never seen Fishbone perform live, you have NOT lived fully;) It is something you must experience before you pass from this earth.

I was fortunate to see the documentary in NYC at ReRun Theater in Brooklyn, a fantastic venue with seating from reclaimed car seats, http://reruntheater.com/index.php, last Saturday. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make the screening with the live performance the previous Friday night, but some gracious soul posted one of my favorite fishbone songs, Lemon Meringue, on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7zqKdvDBjo, from this performance. Thank God for the internet! It goes without saying that this documentary is awesome. How could it not be with Fishbone as it subject?

If you don’t have any fishbone albums, then, you are really missing out on amazing musical experiences. However, you can remedy that by purchasing them. My favorite fishbone album is Give A Monkey A Brain And He’ll Swear He’s The Center Of The Universe. My 2nd favorite is Chim Chim’s Badass Revenge. There’s a tie for 3rd place between Truth & Soul and The Reality of My Surroundings. Everybody and their mama would probably say that Truth & Soul is their favorite, but not me… I love the constant evolution of Fishbone. This band shouldn’t be pigeonholed.

Mark Pritchard is a musical genius; He can switch musical genres like you bat your eyes. He has a gazillion aliases. I’ll name a few here: Africa Hitech w/ Steve Spacek, Global Communication w/ Tom Middleton, Troubleman, Harmonic 33 w/Dave Brinkworth, Harmonic 313, Reload, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Unlike what this article, proposes, I personally revel in Mark’s ecletic taste in making music. That is what No Turn Unstoned is all about. Good music of any genre. I ♥ Machinedrum Mix (No Turn Unstoned #159)

In 2006, I bought Machinedrum’s ENTIRE musical catalog up until that point on Merck Records based on hearing only one song, Mltply;) I hadn’t done this before or since. I’ve been listening to and supporting Machinedrum, ever since. Oh my! What a wild musical ride it has been! His musical evolution has been quite amazing. I can’t wait to hear what the next decade brings.

DAMN! (No Turn Unstoned #157)

After my 3 week summer hiatus, I’m back with a mix in honor of James Blake’s CMYK. Last week, I went to go see him perform for a second time this year in NYC. When he performed CMYK live, I was blown away. It was never my favorite song on the EP. My favorite track on the EP was and still is, Postpone, but now I get why so many folks liked that song in particular. I’ve come to the conclusion that ALL of James Blake’s songs just sound EXTRA-extraordinary performed live.

Since Damn is used a lot in CMYK and a personal incident had me swearing in my head this week, I thought I create a mix around the word.
