Back from my summer hiatus, I created this set specifically to introduce John Waller to Luke Vibert’s music, but everybody needs to hear Luke Vibert’s music!
Constructing this mix was painful and a bit maddening. I had been putting off creating this set for literally months, waiting ’til I had the time and sanity to dedicate to this gargantuan task. The only thing worse would be putting together a 2-hour Prince set.
I haven’t spent this much time on a set ever, but I wanted to get it as close to “good,” as humanly possible, to represent and give reverence to the genius who is Luke Vibert!
For the mix, I had to create some limits (This really didn’t help much though. Luke is very prolific!).
- First of all, I tried to limit myself to my usual 2 hr set, but this was really very difficult. I got a rough mix of 3 hrs and tried to whittle it down to a little over 2 hrs and 30 minutes. Luke has soooooooo many freaking fantastic songs. There were so many I had to leave out. I got the song selection down to 84 songs. Normally for a good set, 40 is a manageable number… so, more songs, more problems with weaving together a smooth set 😉 Selection is really key, but even moreso sequencing that selection. The mix is not perfect, but I gave it my all.
- I decided to not include any of his remixes or productions for other musicians (most notably his big dada productions), and concentrate on Luke and his many aliases. This was above and beyond more than enough; Luke Vibert records as Luke Vibert, Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews, Spac Hand Luke, The Ace of Clubs, Butler Kieve, and Visible Crater Funk.
I could write pages and pages on why I like Luke’s music so much, but this blog post by Gutterbreakz does it beautifully for me, “Good Luck in Easy Listening: AN APPRECIATION OF LUKE VIBERT, and to quote the post: “If I had to single out one individual artist who has consistently brought unadulterated pleasure into my life over the past decade, it would have to be Luke Vibert… The guy is well on the way to becoming a National Treasure (of the UK) and frankly I think we should all be grateful that he continues to eke out a living from his music, rather than getting a proper job.”
I, for one, am very, very happy that Luke continues to passionately and prolifically make music [and not succumb to the proper job] and LOTS of it! Unlike, Domu ;(
Bar none, nowadays, Luke is my main, musical, man, and has been for over a decade now. I never preview his albums. I don’t need to hear them; I know the songs will be phenomenal; I just buy them. When life gets me down, I just have to put on any Luke Vibert song and I know that “everything’ll be alright in the end.” His music always gives me something to look forward to, as I know he is always creating plenty of it!
I am absolutely elated that my lifespan has aligned with his. It has been an amazing, musical journey.
It is important to support musicians in any way possible so that they can continue to do what they do best, and I hope you will definitely support Luke and the labels that release his music. A lot of his back catalog can be found digitally @ bleep.com.

Here is an overview of the selection of songs and albums used for the set. Please keep in my mind, however, that for some songs I only used very small clips (in the seconds), for others, I sliced and diced ’em to scatter the song throughout the set, and more often than not made edits throughout to the entire song:
