Be EASY (No Turn Unstoned #222)
STOP THE PRESSES!! It has been 7 years since Alice Smith’s last album. It has been a very long wait, but well worth it. To celebrate the release of She, I am doing a mix based around my favorite song on the album, Be Easy.
Alice Smith is by far my favorite, living female vocalist. NO ONE has a voice like hers. What an amazing year of music so far with my favorite living, male vocalist, Bilal, also releasing a new album, A Love Surreal, (an amazing record, don’t sleep on it…) just a month ago! Both in the same year for me is like heaven. Not to mention Jamie Lidell and Alice Russell’s new releases as well;) Please support all of ‘em by buying their amazing music so they can all continue to make the magic happen.

MY SOUL Ain’t For Sale (No Turn Unstoned #184)

While I was preparing for the 2nd Don Cornelius tribute set, I discovered this haunting song, My Soul, My Spirit by Mike Grant remixed by Mr. G, and I literally had it on repeat ALL this week. The song samples the poem, Run Free or Die, as well as some of dialogue from the prison classroom scene by the powerful, poet/activist/actress Sonja Sohn from the film, Slam.
Particularly, the following words palpably resonate with me:
It doesn’t hold you back anymore. It doesn’t lock you down.
The beginning of 2012 has seen the passing of many talented men and women who inspired me greatly and continue to do so (Etta James, Claire Fischer, and Don Cornelius). As a result, I thought I’d honor someone while they are still living for a change.

Sonja Sohn is a woman of integrity and speaks even more with actions than she does with her words (and she is extraordinary with words so her actions speak volumes.) First of all, she could live anywhere and she chooses to live in Baltimore. Secondly, she took a year off from her acting career to cultivate ReWired for Change. Being a black actress is hard enough in Hollywood, but she was willing to make a sacrifice that could have negatively impacted her acting career. Thankfully, it did not.
I spent four summers in Baltimore, and the Believe campaign made a lasting impression on me. So, I thought it appropriate to end the mix with Ray Charles’ I Believe To My Soul in reverence.

Best Songs of 2011 (No Turn Unstoned #177)
First of all, Happy New Year to all of my listeners! I’m glad to get back to the show.
This is the 2nd set of 4 best of 2011 sets. This one features the best songs of 2011 and is by far my favorite show to mix each year. The last set featured the top 10 albums of 2011. Next week will be the best remixes of 2011, and the following week the originals of the remixes.
Even though Africa Hitech’s Out in the Streets is hands down song of the year, generally I didn’t include songs that I played during the best albums of 2011 mix in order to not be repetitive.
This mix does include a few songs from 2010, most notably if they were released in November or December of 2010. However, there are a couple songs from 2010 that were released earlier than that, that I just could not stop playing throughout the entire year of 2011.
