Besides, twenty years is a long time… I will postpone the general Ninja Tune songs set for one more week. So, the next show will be the 3rd set of 4 featuring Ninja Tune.

No Turn Unstoned #123: Ninja Tune XX (The Albums)
Celebrating Ninja Tune’s XX, this will be the 1st set of 4 featuring Ninja Tune. This time around the focus will be my top 10 albums from the Ninja Tune / Big Dada roster.
Let me know if I missed an amazing ninja tune album for the top 10 in the comments.
(play streaming mp3 archive if you can’t access the play.fm widget)
#1 Daedelus’ Love To Make Music To 2008
[Ninja Tune]
This album is truly amazing. Even two years later, it is still in my current, weekly rotation. Daedelus really outdid himself on this one. I personally feel that this is his masterpiece, so far. So far being the key words, as I expect him to exceed this, as he did for me with Exquisite Corpse. Up until this record, I thought it was Daedelus’ masterpiece. So, I’ve been here before, and he is definitely not done yet. So, I am on pins and needles waiting for the next Daedelus masterpiece. Can’t Wait!
#2 Daedelus’ Exquisite Corpse 2005
[Ninja Tune]
Until Love to Make Music To, Exquisite Corpse was, hands down, my favorite Daedelus record. When figuring out the top 10 for this set, to be honest, I kept going back and forth over which one should be number one. So, technically, it really is a tie. However, I decided to put Love to Make Music To as number one because the songs I love, I am absolutely heads over heels for. However, I must admit there are a couple of tunes that don’t do it for me, in comparison to Exquisite Corpse where there isn’t one single song on there that I do not like.
I also broke a rule that I had instituted for myself in order to create this set. The rule was I would only have one album in the top 10 from any one artist. Because if I didn’t, I’d have both of my beloved Wagon Christ records, a couple from Mr. Scruff, etc. However, I could not keep this rule for Daedelus. I could NOT choose one release over the other.
So, why do I love Daedelus so much? Eclectic is his middle name, and he always surprises. The way he puts together sounds are extraordinary, and the rappers he gets to rhyme over some of these crazy rhythms are fearless!
#3 The Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination’s I Was Young And I Needed The Money 1998
[Ninja Tune]
Dear Florian Schmitt,
You are one insanely, talented individual. As a web designer, I have been following your company Hi-ReS! since the Requiem for a Dream website; The output and trajectory of your companies have been absolutely stunning. However, I mourn for The Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination. Why did you choose design over music?
When I think of you, I often think of what happens when certain people don’t pursue a certain creative path. What would my life be without Luke Vibert releasing 2 to 3 albums a year. What if Luke decided to do something else besides music. I shudder at that thought. I know you are doing what you love, but you have some music fans out here that would love to hear another full length release from you.
I absolutely adore this record; I listen to this often, still. However, they do say it is better to love once, than not at all. So, as a stoic, I know at least you released one full length record. You could have not even released one at all. So, I am truly thankful that you did!
Sincerely,
PS
Along with Nicolette’s Let No One Live Rent Free In Your Head and Fishbone’s Give A Monkey A Brain… And He’ll Swear He’s The Center Of The Universe, I Was Young And I Needed The Money is one of my favorite album titles of all time.
#4 Amon Tobin’s Bricolage 1997
Amon Tobin really shouldn’t be on this list; He is in a class by himself. He is otherworldly. He has no competition. He can not be compared to anyone. He is truly the definition of an artist.
For most, Supermodified would be THE album, but for me it is most definitely Bricolage. Why? I love the obvious jazz influence, but, really, Chomp Samba alone merits this album as being the best Amon Tobin Ninja Tune album ever. However, the whole album is a sonic experience.

#5 Mr. Scruff’s Keep it Unreal 1999 / Keep It Unreal (10th Anniversary Analogue Remaster Edition) 2009
[Ninja Tune]
Of all the records on this list, this one has the best production. Mr. Scruff’s productions are insanely immaculate, and of course his songs are darn catchy and, downright, fun. We all need a little fun and humor in our lives. I could put Fish on repeat for the rest of my life, and I would never tire of it;)
#6 Wagon Christ’s Musipal 2001
[Ninja Tune]
OK. It should be no secret that I absolutely love Luke Vibert! If you are a regular (or even occasional) listener, you should know this by now, but in case you don’t, peep this in case you need remindin’…
Also, it should be apparent that it pained me to list Musipal as #6, but I had to be honest. On Ninja Tune, Daedelus rules. However, Luke’s (or, er, rather Wagon Christ’s) Sorry I Made you Lush was another great Ninja Tune release. I only broke my rule of one release per artist for Daedelus ;( I feel like I committed blasphemy in not doing so for my main, musical man. Please don’t hate me, Luke!
#7 DJ Food’s Kaleidoscope 2000
[Ninja Tune]
Listening to this is a pure cinematic experience. I’m always haunted by …You!
In this world
of ordinary people
extraordinary people
I’m glad there is
…You!
#8 Funki Porcini’s The Ultimately Empty Million Pounds 1999
[Ninja Tune]
This release is not just a collection of songs; It is THE definition of an album. Even though I singled out a couple of songs, it best experienced as a whole. This is becoming a lost art.
#9 Ty’s Upwards 2003
[Big Dada]
One of the best hip hop records ever recorded!

#10 Roots Manuva’s Run Come Save Me 2001/ Dub Come Save Me 2002
[Big Dada]
I’m cheating here, but I don’t listen to one without listening to the other. I have always seen Run Come Save Me and Dub Come Save Me as the same record, even though they were released a year apart.
What can I say? Roots Manuva is one of the best MCs of all time, period! His delivery is mad wicked and his lyrical content is heavy.
Also, the album cover for Run Come Save Me is one of my favorites of all time.

No Turn Unstoned #122: Restart!
BILAL OLIVER is without a doubt my most favorite male singer/songwriter who is still recording (that’s a nod to you Lewis Taylor
Please stop your self-imposed retirement!) My family on my mother’s side are Olivers, but sadly I don’t think Bilal & I are of the same Oliver clan
I wish!!! As a result, I also connect with Bilal on a familial level because of his name. The name Oliver means everything to me.
In celebration of Bilal’s new album … FINALLY!, this week’s theme is Restart! Restart is the first single off of the album. Support this musical genius and buy his record, Airtight’s Revenge! I do NOT want him to stop recording too because of the lack of support from the record buying public
(play streaming mp3 archive if you can’t access the play.fm widget)
And don’t miss out on an opportunity to see him live. His live shows are not to be missed!!

No Turn Unstoned #120: You Know I Love You More, When You’re COLD & HEARTless!
This set is dedicated to the character Eric Northman on True Blood.
I can’t bleed forever. Oh, these stains will never come clean.
– Shades of Day
Say it isn’t so! I hope they did not kill off my favorite character on True Blood. There hasn’t been a character as close to Ayn Rand’s Howard Roarke since Queer as folk’s Brian Kinney.
More rock (post, indie, rockabilly, death metal, etc.) and blues than usual for No Turn Unstoned in a single set, but we love all genres of music.

No Turn Unstoned #118: ABBEY LINCOLN was here!
When everything is finished in a world, the people go to look for what the artists leave. It’s the only thing that we have really in this world — is an ability to express ourselves and say, “I was here.” —Abbey Lincoln
Rest in peace, Abbey! Your artistry touched me very deeply during your journey here.
Abbey Lincoln / August 6, 1930 – August 14, 2010

Forgive me if I seem to preach
but there is something that I wanna say
a message that I hope will reach
people who are throwing life away
I call it my philosophy
that is why I pass it on to you
because it works so well for me
and helps me get away from strife
I hope you’ll listen carefully
They say the truth will make you free
and that’s the way you wanna be
cause, brother, this is your lifelong as you’re living
always remember
time is for spending
but there’s an ending
while you are sleeping
lifetime is creeping
wake up and taste it
foolish to waste it
sample and savor
all of its flavor
long as you’re livinglong as you’re living
always remember
folks who are lazy
are playing crazy
better keep moving
keep on improving
you won’t be hurried
after you’re buried
live every minute
put yourself in it
long as you’re livinglong as you’re living
always remember
you’ll never beat life
don’t try to cheat life
all men are brothers
do unto others
love’s for enjoying
hate’s for destroying
never forget it
or you’ll regret it
long as you’re livingForgive me if I seem to preach
but there was something that I had to say
a message that I hope will reach
people who are throwing life away
I call it my philosophy
that is why I pass it on to you
because it works so well for me
and helps me get away from strife
I hope you’ll listen carefully
They say the truth will make you free
and that’s the way you wanna because, brother, this is your life!

No Turn Unstoned #113: I hear you, LUKE VIBERT!
(play streaming mp3 archive if you can’t access the play.fm widget)
Back from my summer hiatus, I created this set specifically to introduce John Waller to Luke Vibert’s music, but everybody needs to hear Luke Vibert’s music!
Constructing this mix was painful and a bit maddening. I had been putting off creating this set for literally months, waiting ’til I had the time and sanity to dedicate to this gargantuan task. The only thing worse would be putting together a 2-hour Prince set.
I haven’t spent this much time on a set ever, but I wanted to get it as close to “good,” as humanly possible, to represent and give reverence to the genius who is Luke Vibert!
For the mix, I had to create some limits (This really didn’t help much though. Luke is very prolific!).
- First of all, I tried to limit myself to my usual 2 hr set, but this was really very difficult. I got a rough mix of 3 hrs and tried to whittle it down to a little over 2 hrs and 30 minutes. Luke has soooooooo many freaking fantastic songs. There were so many I had to leave out. I got the song selection down to 84 songs. Normally for a good set, 40 is a manageable number… so, more songs, more problems with weaving together a smooth set
Selection is really key, but even moreso sequencing that selection. The mix is not perfect, but I gave it my all.
- I decided to not include any of his remixes or productions for other musicians (most notably his big dada productions), and concentrate on Luke and his many aliases. This was above and beyond more than enough; Luke Vibert records as Luke Vibert, Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews, Spac Hand Luke, The Ace of Clubs, Butler Kieve, and Visible Crater Funk.
I could write pages and pages on why I like Luke’s music so much, but this blog post by Gutterbreakz does it beautifully for me, “Good Luck in Easy Listening: AN APPRECIATION OF LUKE VIBERT, and to quote the post: “If I had to single out one individual artist who has consistently brought unadulterated pleasure into my life over the past decade, it would have to be Luke Vibert… The guy is well on the way to becoming a National Treasure (of the UK) and frankly I think we should all be grateful that he continues to eke out a living from his music, rather than getting a proper job.”
I, for one, am very, very happy that Luke continues to passionately and prolifically make music [and not succumb to the proper job] and LOTS of it! Unlike, Domu ;(
Bar none, nowadays, Luke is my main, musical, man, and has been for over a decade now. I never preview his albums. I don’t need to hear them; I know the songs will be phenomenal; I just buy them. When life gets me down, I just have to put on any Luke Vibert song and I know that “everything’ll be alright in the end.” His music always gives me something to look forward to, as I know he is always creating plenty of it!
I am absolutely elated that my lifespan has aligned with his. It has been an amazing, musical journey.
It is important to support musicians in any way possible so that they can continue to do what they do best, and I hope you will definitely support Luke and the labels that release his music. A lot of his back catalog can be found digitally @ bleep.com.
For updated info on Luke, definitely, check: http://www.wagonchrist.com
Here is an overview of the selection of songs and albums used for the set. Please keep in my mind, however, that for some songs I only used very small clips (in the seconds), for others, I sliced and diced ‘em to scatter the song throughout the set, and more often than not made edits throughout to the entire song:

Oh, hi, neighbors!
Tonight, we’ve chosen some of the songs
that we sing and play on our dances across the country.Songs that reflect the emotion of the people that live in the night life.
Songs of happiness, sadness, heartbreak. Songs of the night life.
And we hope that you enjoy yourself, tonight, as you’ll listen to our latest.
We hope you like it;
it’s a little different from what we normally do,
but we hope that it will be pleasing to ya.And we hope that you can just kinda, sit back, kick off your shoes, relax just a little bit
And listen to our latest album
And if you like it, tell us about it, won’t you? We’ll try to do

No Turn Unstoned 112: Happy 52nd Birthday, Prince!
Words would cheapen how much Prince’s music has impacted my life… So, I won’t even try to attempt to explain how and why. However, the one thing I will say is that there can be only one, and he is it! In tribute of his birthday today, I created a special mix to celebrate Prince’s existence. I created this set with ♥ and care.
For the set, I decided to concentrate on the B-Sides and 12″ mixes from his main associates. Trying to create a 2-hour set of Prince songs would be too overwhelming of a task for me.

No Turn Unstoned #110: STARS fell on alabama
Instead of doing a typical mother’s day set, I thought I’d treat my grandma and mama like STARS in the sky… Besides, all the mama songs I found were quite negative like James Brown’s Mama’s Dead, Vincent Gallo’s No More Papa Mama, Stars of the Lid’s Requiem for Dying Mothers and Goldie’s one-hour of screaming Mother… Entertaining the thought of putting that set together was making me depressed… Feel free to enlighten me about good mother songs that are not too depressing or “syrupy” for that matter for a proper mother set in the future. Let me know the other songs in the comments, and I’ll consider it for a part two show for this theme.
