STEELY DAN Covered & Sampled (No Turn Unstoned #163)

In celebration of seeing Steely Dan live for the first time in my life last night, STEELY DAN Covered & Sampled (No Turn Unstoned #163)

I give gratitude and thanks to the Jive Miguel Steely Dan Sampled list by Barney Hurley from the band Samuel Purdey. It helped greatly with putting together this set.

Also, you should check out the following two stellar projects: Steely Dan mashed together with Nas’ Illmatic, Steelmatic and sampling taken to a whole other level, resulting in Day Glow Freaks

One thought on “STEELY DAN Covered & Sampled (No Turn Unstoned #163)

  1. During a long drive, I was listening to the album “Aja”… the memories it evoked carrying me back to a pivotal place in time. Later that same day, I found myself listening to “Steely Dan Covered and Sampled” on No Turn Unstoned. Now I was being pushed forward to a new place of discovery. Sampling isn’t part of my musical language and I don’t quite understand it. Half the time I don’t even know the music that’s being sampled. But this was different. Steely Dan’s music is so ingrained in my being that listening to this show back to back with the original music presented a way in.

Still… I got off to a rocky start even though a sample of “Aja” (my favorite) started the set. But along the way there were covers. For example, The Woody Herman and Buddy Rich Bands covered Green Earrings. Big Band music is so well suited to the expansiveness and complexity of Steely Dan….just beautiful. Who knew you loved Big Band music too, De Angela? Surprised me with that one.

By the time Kanye sampled Kid Charlemagne in Champion, I was not only “getting it”, I was enjoying it. Woody Herman’s cover of Kid Charlemagne followed directly by Kanye’s sample of Kid Charlemagne was brilliant. The cover of Green Earrings (mentioned earlier) was later sampled in Walk Into The Sun. These connections, presenting a cover followed by a sample, were so helpful to someone like me. In fact, your entire set list was masterful. Sneaking an actual, lesser-known Steely Dan song (Glamour Profession) in the mix…just perfect. But I think my favorite was Home At Last being sampled back to back in both The Show Down and The Concept. It was seamless. The piano track in The Show Down is hauntingly beautiful…can’t get it out of my head…not that I want to. I didn’t even know this song existed before listening to this show.

Without your comments during the broadcast, I would have been lost. But the set list on your website, along with detailed explanations of covers and samples is really something to behold. Not only is it comprehensive, it’s visually beautiful. I didn’t discover it until after I’d already listened to the radio show. Of course I listened a second time, set list at hand, with a new appreciation for what I was hearing.

This extraordinary range of Steely Dan covers and samples, presented across such diverse genres is a beautiful tribute to their musical legacy.
